International Bird Rescue
International Bird Rescue (IBR) has been saving seabirds and aquatic birds since 1971. We have managed the oiled wildlife response in over 200 oil spill events around the world, including the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico where we dispatched 90 oil spill response team members to the region to care for oiled pelicans, ducks, herons and other affected species. We operate two wildlife hospitals along the coast of California, in the San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles areas to effectively serve the Northern and Southern coastline. Each day, injured and ill birds that live on or near water are brought to our centers for care. We receive over 5,000 birds each year that are victims of fishing line entanglements and swallowed fish hooks, the victims of animal cruelty and other human-wrought problems. We conserve, help and protect these species that are indicators of ocean health, a priceless and precious resource, through our work. Our impact is local, regional and international in its scope. The daily work with the species most vulnerable in the event of an oil spill keeps our skills razor sharp in the event of an emergency and able to manage the unique needs of species that are not anatomically designed for survival out of the water.
