The Ultimate Boston Logan Airport Guide

Spread the love

General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport (BOS), famous as Boston Logan International Airport or Logan Airport, is partially located in East Boston and Winthrop. The airport got its name from General Edward Lawrence Logan, a Boston-native politician and 20th-century soldier.

With an average yearly passenger traffic of close to 40.8 million, Boston Airport is the busiest in the Northeastern United States and one of the busiest in the US. BOS serves as a hub for Delta Air Lines and Cape Air and as a focus city for JetBlue. Atlanta, Orlando, and Washington–National are the busiest domestic routes from Logan Airport.

Boston Logan Airport History

Boston Airport launched its operations on September 8, 1923. Initially known as the “Boston Air Port” at Jeffries Point, the United States Army Air Corps and Massachusetts Air National Guard used the airport. However, commercial airline service started with the flight between Boston and New York City in 1927 via Colonial Air Transport. In 1929, the City of Boston took over the airport’s ownership.

Development during the 1940s

As the aviation sector grew in the US after World War II, this airport also experienced considerable upgrades in its services and facilities.

  • Boston Airport added 1,800 acres of landfill in Boston Harbor, taken from the former Apple, Noddle’s, and Governors Islands.
  • The state of Massachusetts renamed the airport in honor of Maj. Gen. Edward Lawrence Logan in 1943.
  • The airport turned out to be a transatlantic gateway after World War II. In 1946, American Overseas Airlines was the first carrier to add a transatlantic service from Boston to Shannon and later to London.
  • In 1947, Pan Am launched nonstop flight services to Santa Maria Airport in the Azores and Shannon Airport in Ireland, and later to Lisbon and London, respectively.
  • Terminals B and C, which are still in operation, were added in 1949.
  • In 1952, the airport became the first in the US to start an indirect rapid transit connection, with the Airport station opening on the Blue Line.
  • The British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) started operating direct flights to Glasgow via a Boeing Stratocruiser airplane. BOAC also was the first air company to launch direct flights to London via De Havilland Comet – the world’s first commercial jet aircraft.
  • Since 1956, the airport has been owned and operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport).
  • By 1957, there were more departures from the airport as carriers like American Airlines, Easter Air Lines, United Airlines, TWA, Northeast Airlines, Mohawk Airlines, National Airlines, etc., had service from the airport.

Jumbo Jet era

  • The primary runway underwent expansion in the late 1960s, with plans for a new one to the south in the 1970s. However, as the plan had opposition from the locals, courts didn’t permit this, and it wasn’t opened till 2006.
  • Boston Airport’s “jumbo jet era” started in 1970 summer when Pan Am started service to London Heathrow daily via Boeing 747. British Airways had scheduled Boeing 747-400 flights to Boston till 2020. Lufthansa also had nonstop flights to Frankfurt via Boeing 747s.

Later developments

Expansion continued to happen in Boston Airport.

  • Currently, the airport has four terminals. Terminal A opened in 2005 as a result of a lease between Massport and Delta Air Lines.
  • Terminal E serves as the international terminal that underwent several expansions and renovations till 2017. Terminals B and C also underwent significant expansion.
  • JetBlue, which started its operation at BOS in 2004, became the airport’s biggest carrier by 2011. The airline has flights to cities all over North America and the Caribbean. JetBlue still is the biggest carrier operating from BOS.
  • Airbus A380 first landed at Logan Airport on March 26, 2017, as British Airways operated the aircraft thrice a week.
  • Boston Logan International Airport is currently recognized as a large hub primary commercial service facility.
