About Newark Airport
Newark Liberty International Airport is jointly owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Opened in 1928, this public airport is currently the hub of United Airlines and the operating base for Spirit Airlines. It is also the second-busiest airport in New York, just behind JFK Airport. EWR Airport offers a gateway to Europe, South America, Asia, and Oceania. The airport has three terminals: Terminals A, B, and C.
Newark Airport History
EWR Airport was named Newark Metropolitan Airport when it was first opened on Oct 1, 1928. Its first terminal, the Art Deco Administration Building, was built in 1934. It was the busiest commercial airport for 11 years, and it was the only airport to serve New York. Later, in 1939, LaGuardia Airport opened in Queens.
During World War II, Newark Airport helped in the logistics operations of the U.S. Army. It was reopened in 1946, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took over the operations.
The airport underwent drastic developments during this time. It has an instrument runway, a control tower, an air cargo center, and a second terminal building. In the 1970s, they built roadways, taxiways, and a third terminal. The construction work for a fourth terminal also began.
The airport’s first monorail system opened in late 1996 and connected the three terminals, parking lots, and garages, as well as the rental car facilities. In 2001, they renamed it AirTrain Newark and expanded to the new Newark Airport train station on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor line.
It was in 2000 that the Port Authority moved Building 51, renaming it Building One, which is now where the administrative offices are. After the Sept 11 attacks, the airport changed its name to Newark Liberty International Airport as a tribute to the victims of the attacks and the landmark Statue of Liberty.
